Find a text to evaluate for cultural relevance and adoption.
- Identify a text used in the past, or one to be used in the future.
- Googlebooks allows for searching sections of text. If you can get a full table of contents, index, glossary, and view of other chapters it would suffice for this assignment.
- Consider the source's ability to differentiate effectively to meet the needs of all learners along a second language progress continuum.
- Use the Text and Non-Text Selection criteria sheet and fill it out in full with comments on each section.
- Use the criteria sheet to rate the book, and make an overall decision regarding the book's appropriateness
- Make suggestions as to how to supplement the book: differentiation, scaffolding, tiering, or any other support needed to fill in any gaps and make the text usable.
Create an outline detailing a set of school guidelines for selecting a textbook for inclusive classrooms. Describe and critique the non-textbook selection process based on how well the current process recognizes diverse cultures and meets the needs of all learners in your school. Propose any necessary changes to the non-textbook selection process.
