1 & 2. The NFL issued out back in the early 1990's a "encyclopedia of teams" set of resource guides (each team has a book ie ; Buffalo Bills, Dallas Cowboys, etc - facts about the team, history, famous players, etc.) that I continue to use with my students as a means of adding literacy into my PE/APE classes.  They are meant for upper elementary levels and are good at supporting students learn about the game of football as it relates to our unit.  While the books are older, they continue to be a great resource for me and my classes as a mechanism to promote literacy, cultural integration in sports, diversity, etc.

Name of Text:  Buffalo Bills/NFL Resource Guide

Publisher/Author: Creative Education Inc. /  Steve Potts

Publication Date: 1991

Rating in favor of adoption

1 (low) 5 (high)

1. Support for standards

While this is an older text, it is a great reference/supplemental book to incorporate literacy with students during Flag Football Unit

4

2. Cultural relevance: assumptions, perceptions, cultural friendliness, multi-cultural

Book does a decent job including information on a variety of players on the team (diversity) and talking about history of the sport and it’s cultural significance.

4

3. Content support

Again the info is a little outdated, but it talks to the time and then creates opportunities for reflection on how the game has changed since the 1990s.

3

4. Readability and grade level applicability

Nice balance of words, color pictures, and is at grade level.

4

5. Content Objectives

As a supplement, the teacher would need to identify the objectives of this piece of literature.

2

6. Graphic support: graphs, charts, other learning aids

This book is more of an add onto the the existing PE program – Not a primary source of information as this would be conducted in the activity classes.

3

7. Visual Support: pictures, graphics, other visual support

Good balance of reading and visual

3

8. Vocabulary:

  • Tier 1, 2, and 3 vocabulary
  • How much adjustment/modification will be needed?

This resource would be a little challenging for ELLs, but all materials also come in a Spanish version of this book (would have to be ordered).  Language is relevant to the grade level and could also be at MS level.

4

9. Bias

Very limited bias

5

10. Differentiation and scaffolding support for cultural relevance.

Lots of opportunities to break this reading resource down into smaller chunks and as well to implement alternative reading comprehension tasks.   Would require more teacher planning of such tasks, but is doable.
