Respond to the following scenario:
You have a new student, Jin Wu, who seems to focus as you give instructions, particularly for the writing test he is about to take. In class he is making good progress as a new language learner, in both content and in building his language skills. Classroom writing assignments have been differentiated to allow him to draw from background knowledge to inspire writing, and further fluency.
Students have been given 45 minutes to complete a writing exam. As they begin to work, Jin puts his head down and starts reading, but does not write. Other students are writing furiously. After about 30 minutes, Jin raises his hand to ask a question, and points to the first writing prompt to ask what it means. He cannot get beyond the first two words.
While it might be too late to do anything with or for Jin in this setting, what information can you draw from this event, and what can you do to prepare Jin for the next on-demand writing event?
