I would initiate a conversation as to why he waited so long to ask for assistance. I would defiantly work on building confidence and that it's okay to ask for clarification. Moving forward I would provide Jin with various prompts, just to facilitate the breaking down of a prompt, and review keywords that may be incorporated in the prompt. Words such as: Imagine, makeup, pretend, describe, explain, persuade, your own experience, persuasive, give your opinion, base on the story, compare/contrast, and informed. I would create prompts according to topics he can relate to, such as: Explain what’s something you’re good at and how did you learn it? Or Many families have recipes that have been shared throughout the years. What is a traditional food that your family eats? What makes it special?
I would review the prompts prior to testing. I have and would ask the students to read the prompt to me and have them explain the task. Teach them to annotate keywords within the prompts, and to reread the prompt after they have written a few sentences, to make sure they are still on task.
