It seems that this student has been in school before and know the norms of sitting and listening in class. However, just becasue a student is sitting and actively listening to you does not necessarily mean that they understand what is going on. Over the next few months the teacher could give small activities in segmented parts to check in and make sure there is udnerstanding, not just the compliance of listening.
