Based on Jin’s experience in the timed writing exam, I would implement the reading scaffolding technique of Oral Language Instruction Integration. Based on his attentive listening during instructions, I would assume that the biggest problem for Jin was getting beyond the first two words of the instruction, which threw him off his game for the first 30 minutes of the writing test. To prevent this from happening again, I would read the instructions to him before the test begins, particularly if I know that the writing prompt includes non-content-specific academic vocabulary that an ELL would be unfamiliar with.
