Scenario Response 2
Scenario 2
Regarding the question, I cannot imagine a classroom that is completely homogenous, or “mainstream,” in which the addition of new students with a unique cultural background is a complete shock to the senses. In this scenario, I would begin by researching a bit about the new students’ background, so that I do not make any ignorant assumptions that could lead to insensitive miscommunications. I would encourage the new student to share a bit about themselves to the class, and possibly explain the concept of ethnocentrism or cultural relativity. I think it is extremely important for all students to recognize that they all have their own cultures which influence their perspectives in life, and that another student’s culture is not strange or bad just because it is different from their own or the majority.
