One criterion-based assessment that I would use is an argumentative writing exercise based on a reading. The students would be assessed on their use of evidence, organization, vocabulary, and explanation of ideas rather than by comparison to others.

Interim assessments that I would conduct include checkpoints at various stages in the lesson. The students may answer questions in a graphic organizer, write a short constructed-response question, and discuss their answers with peers before they provide the final response. This will allow me to catch any misunderstandings early in the process and change my approach accordingly.
