Name one formative assessment you have used with success in the past. What was successful about it?

  • I have used and continue to use Total Response Signals. I use them several times during my math lessons. I will scaffold the lesson through “I do”, “we do”, “you do”, independent practice, and an exit ticket. Students have access to personal whiteboards where we will complete a math problem as a class together. From there students will complete a “you do” question and after a few minutes of productive struggle students will show me their work. The students who completed the problem correctly will be released to complete independent practice in their workbook and those who did not get the question correct I know to monitor and provide additional support. Based on their work on their whiteboard the student and I will discuss what they did right with the problem and where the disconnect occurred.

Name one formative assessment approach from this module that you'd like to use moving forward, and explain why.

  • One formative assessment approach that I would like to try moving forward is Keep, Delete, Substitute, Select. I feel this strategy would be extremely useful in streamlining information because it distinguishes important from less important information, and synthesizes concepts.
