Module 3 Discussion: Moving Students Into a New Culture
Culture Shock
I experienced culture shock just a few years ago when I moved from the Midwest to south Florida. My previous classrooms in the Midwest were made of of mostly African American children. I also taught elementary at the time in the inner city. When I moved to Florida, not only was I teaching a new grade level (middle school), but the culture was completely different. The community I moved from was very afflent and mostly white. The new community was very diverse, with African American, Hispanic, and White being split just about evenly. I felt out of place. Over time, I finally started to adjust to my new normal. I made friends and realized that my new students were no different that my old students. I loved how my own daughter was now a part of a very diverse culture where she was able to learn more about people who were differen than her.
