I have experience culture shock in my live couple of times. First of all I must say that I was born and raised in Cuba. I studied and graduated as a Foreign Language teacher in Havana University. Just graduated I went to work to Germany. I worked as a translator and my experience upon arriving in that country was traumatizing.  I was alone, without family, or friends, in a country completely different than mine (different climate, different culture, different foods, and customs) Little by little I started making friends, trying the new food, and celebrating German traditions. I lived there for four years, and everything become normal, but there were still moments I struggled with being a foreigner.

I returned to Cuba, where it took me a while to get used to the transport system, weather, and the noises on the street again.

After a few years I returned to Germany one more time to visit Halle university for my Master degree. Being in their classes was another hard experience.

And finally 18 years ago I decided to move to the USA. I did not speak English at that time, just a few words, not enough to get a job. Being an ELL student myself was very overwhelming experience in the classroom and school.  I went to school and renewed/ transcribed  my degree, also got my teacher certification ( temporal and professional)

Base on my own experiences I always make sure the ELL students feel welcome and safe in my class. I provide support and multiple opportunities for interactions.
