First, I would gather some data.  Wrtie down when and where these events are occurring and what is happening.  I would also note what happened directly before the event.  After gathering data, I could see if there is a pattern.  Possibly, the problem behavior occurs during ELA independent classwork time.  Perhaps the student does not understand what to do and acts out because they cannot communicate.  Once I have gathered the data, I would look at the child's culture to see if there is possible correlation to what is typical in the culture.

Moving forward, an if...then picture chart to show what behavior or action would be more apporpriate if they are having certain feeling.  A feeling picture chart that tney could point to or place a marker on to show how they are feeling.  That would be based on cultural norms.  Some cultures do not feel it is necessary, or it is even discouraged to discuss feelings. 

Communication with the family, with the help of a translator, about what is occurring is helpful as well.  They may be working with the child at home with a certain behavior and can provide me with any strategies they have used at home.  Consistency, when possible, works the best.
