Jin Wu is struggling with his exam because we never provided the proper scaffolding to Jin. We differentiated his learning to better accommodate his initial writings. However, we never expanded off that to better enrich his writing capabilities. Everything Jin had to write thus far, he was capable of drawing background information off of from his own culture. If you provide Jin a writing that is not relevant to his culture and provide no differentiation then he will struggle.

As for the next on-demand writing event, there should be more scaffolding. Start Jin off with the usual expectations and then ask him to expand off his initial thoughts. Something that can assist Jin in making cognitive connections. I personally would place Jin with a peer and have them complete a KWL after the initial reading of the prompt.
