There are several methods teachers can pursue to alleviate cultural miscommunication. First and foremost, it will be important to research the family’s divergent culture beliefs. This will bring light to social norms, practices, expectations, preferences, etc. Creating a strong relationship with the parents will be crucial. Open communication will ensure both parties are on the same page: teacher sets classroom expectations, parents voice their practices. And beliefs Ask questions to learn about the student’s interests and make them feel welcomed. Incorporate topics that relate to their interests through inquiry-based and discovery-oriented lessons. Provide materials and resources to support their learning. Challenge the student enough, but provide room for trial and error successes. Most importantly, create an environment that fosters diversity, open-mindedness, and encourages students to take risks.
