Scenario Response 5
WOW! This is my classroom and then some.......
All student groups should be assessed on a regular basis. The read & re-read strategy would also benefit.
1. The 2 grade levels below students: I would do read-alouds while using expressions & intonation. Modeling this reading behavior would show students what good reading looks like. I would also use the prior knowledge guild. This jogs student's memories about something they've seen or heard before. Echo reading, repeat after me, would be an asset to this group of students. Students need to know high frequency words when learning how to read fluently.
2. Beginner level bilingual students: I would provide support for non-fluent readers by getting tutors to volunteer. Tutors would get material early and read ahead with students. I would also use the 4 square vocabulary. Research says that pictures help students who are learning another language remember vocabulary words better.
3. Special Education students: I would do read-alouds with expressions & intonation. I would also use differentiated instruction by having students take anecdotal notes and ask questions of the passage.
4. On grade level students: I would expose these students to various genres of reading. By doing so, vocabulary will strengthen and open students up to unfamiliar people, places, & things. I would also allow students to read from the library "books of interest".
5. High poverty groups: I would expose students to various genres of reading. I would help students identify high frequency words. According to research, this subgroup's reading level decreases as they approach higher grades. With that being said, I would do small groups because these students perform better in this type of setting.
