Struggling to respond to basic ideas shows me there are gaps in his learning. For this I'd integrate a story map approach. It provides a visual breakdown of the text, helping them reference key points when needed. Pairing this with small group work taps into the power of peer collaboration, which should deepen his learning experience. Additionally, modeling my thinking during a read-through, while using excerpts from the text, I could offer insights into comprehension strategies. By combining these interventions, I would be addressing the core issue of comprehension while maintaining and using the student's existing knowledge. This is a multi-faceted approach which hopefully will encourage him to dive deeper into the text and lean on his supportive peers which will aid in his overall comprehension level.
