This article from 1995 shows how our educational system was just beginning to understand the importance of including cultural and socioeconomic factors in academic success. In that sense, many things have remained the same. Today, teachers and administrators still recognize that these factors are extremely important to increase student achievement. However, the differences lie in formally recognizing that including the student’s home language is also important to academic success. This article does not mention that native languages or bilingual resources should be used with English language learners. Today, we recognize that utilizing the student’s native language is an important tool to help bridge the cultural and linguistics gap for these students adjusting to a new society and language.
