Scenario Response 3
Differences that students will encounter:
The one who studied in her homeland might have a brief culture shock and struggle in trying to adapt to the new system but he/she still soon catch on. I would give them more application driven instruction to help solidify their mastery of concepts such as phonetics and morphology.
The one who was uprooted will struggle for a longer time and go through a longer period of low academic performance. For these students, one must be very deliberate about how they are teaching concepts. I will reach out to the parents to see what they are doing to close the gap. In addition, I would push for a one on one to aid in understanding/translating ideas.
Having the students understand semantics was the biggest issue i had when i taught ELL students. As a result, i found myself acting out a lot of what I read to the students, a lot of hand motions and such. The idea was to give them a visualization of the worlds that we are reading about.
