Outline for school guidelines for selecting non-textbook materials.

  • Current Non-Textbook Material Selection Process
    - What objectives are the students needing additional content support on?
    - What new technologies, e.g. videos, online practice sites, etc., have the appropriate content to support the learning objectives?
  • Proposed Changes
    - Ask whether the non-textbook materials provide ELL components.
-Consult with teachers and ELL specialists.
-Ensure materials represent different cultures and backgrounds.
-Seek materials with multiple language support.
-Provide accommodations for ELLs at different proficiency levels.
  • Quill.org as a non-textbook material source
-Have ELL take the ESOL specific diagnostic tests.
    -Assign recommended ESOL practice assignments.
-Once the ELLs have passed all the ESOL content to proficiency, have them take the regular diagnostic tests designed for native English speakers.

Outline for school guidelines for selecting a textbook for inclusive classrooms.

  • Does it support the Florida B.E.S.T. standards?
  • Does it contain culturally relevant content?
  • What kind of content support - skill lessons, practice questions, etc. does it provide?
  • Can it be scaffolded for readability?
  • Does it contain graphic aids? If so, are they of good quality?
  • Does it contain visual aids? If so, are they of good quality and do they enhance understanding of the content?
  • What is the vocabulary content? Will it need to be heavily modified?
  • Is there bias?
