First I would introduce myself to the student. Then I would explain my course and behavior expectations for my classroom. I would then ask them to tell me a little about themselves by filling out my student information form that I have all of my students submit at the start of the year. I would ask them about their home country as well. Later I would do some surface research as to how school works in that country. I would reach out to the parents as well to introduce myself and let them know I look forward to having their child in my class.

I would check their ESOL placement test score to set the online textbook scaffolding to the appropriate level.
