Recent changes in high-quality language instruction includes moving away from a traditional learning approach to a more teacher/student engaged learning format. The following are examples of engaged learning instruction:

- Student role: collaborator; sometimes expert
- Curriculum content: integrated disciplines; reality based
- Instructional strategies: flexible; opportunities for choice
- Instructional emphasis: relationships; inquiry and invention; depth
- Concept of knowledge: transformation of facts
- Demonstration of success: quality of understanding
- Assessment: multiple sources of data; performance based; portfolios
