Scenario Response 2
Cultural Miscommunications
When there are students from a different country, I see that as a teachable moment. First of all, for me to learn and grow as an individual and to pass along that information to my students. This allows all of us to embrace the traditions and customs of other cultures in order to help my students broaden their minds and acceptance of others. I might even do a project on the food, music, dance, religion, etc. of that country with the assistance and input of the student and his/her family to help them feel included into the school community. Then, I would have all of the students create a venn diagram of what types of similarities and differences on how "things operate" in the United States on the different topics of food, music, dance, religion, etc. Once this project is completed, I would sit down with the student one on one and clearly define the rules and expectations in the class. Then, I would assign a mentor/facilitator to the student to help him/her acclimate to procedures and work flow of the classroom environment.
