Scenario Response 2
Cultural Miscommunications
There are many different ways that we can help to alleviate cultural miscommunications for the new student. I would first make an effort to learn as much as possible about their culture, so that I can be familiar with any social norms that will affect our communication. For instance, if it is considered rude or a sign of challenge for a child to make eye contact with an adult, then I would not demand the child make eye contact with me when they are speaking. I will discuss these differences with the student so that they are aware and will not be caught off guard in another experience by this type of expectation. I would be very open with my student and try to establish a relationship of trust so that they felt comfortable enough with me to tell me when they were confused or uncomfortable about something.
I do have my rules and procedures posted and would make it a point to go over them thoroughly. I would also pair the student with one of my better behaved students to help them not only meet new friends, but also have someone to help guide them in the social changes they are experiencing.
