Cultural Miscommunications

Cultural Miscommunications

If I had a student enter my class from another country I would first try to learn as much as I can about their cultural norms and beliefs. Once I get an understanding about our new student I can then go over our classroom rules and expectations.  I will also communicate with my class how our new student perceive things because of their divergent cultural beliefs.  I would strongly encourage our class family to be patient and helpful to our new student.  I would ask some of my most friendly helpful students to guide and support our new student. I will also communicate any important information to other teachers and staff that come in contact with the student.  I have found that communicating with the special area teachers about students can be very helpful for them and the student.

Jessica,
I love that you would research the cultural beliefs and that you would communicate with your class how the student may perceive things. I also love that you would encourage your class family to be patient and helpful with the new student. Would you discuss the cultural beliefs in details or just enough so that they would have an understanding?
