While vocabulary and social interaction are equally important, I feel that social interactions are more important for burgeoning ELL students in order to master their vocabulary. That being said, this also depends on who the student is socially interacting with. I would likely gauge where my focus lies based on the other students in the class. If the classroom is lacking in students who can correctly model social and/ or academic use of vocabulary, I may focus more heavily on academics first. If the classroom has students who are kind, supportive, and can model vocabulary correctly, I would lean more towards strengthening those social interactions.
