Teachers are encouraged to deter from excessive correction because learning language is a developmental process. Often times students will correct themselves if they have enough confidence to do so. If a teacher is constantly correcting a student they will later on lose the confidence and will begin to fear it. Errors are apart of learning, it also shows that the student is testing the waters of how language works. The constant interrupting the flow of communication can mess up the understanding and meaning of the words the student is trying to say.

Some alternative ways a teacher can promote awareness would be restating the student's message correctly, as this models correct language while maintaining communication. Teachers can also give students some time to respond because they will often notice their own mistakes during that reflection time.
