Based on the Brain-Based Theory, the child seems to fall under the Acquisition Versus Learning Hypothesis. In this scenario, the student is in what's referred to as the "silent stage." This is where a second language learner is listening more than they are producing. In this case, I would use the LEA approach, incorporating more pictures that they were familiar with in the lessons. I may even shorten the story or text to a summary, uing smaller, more relatable words.
