Critical Thinking Synthesis

As the school librarian I have many opportunities to discuss books with my students. In younger grades, while reading aloud, there are questions that some students will automatically relate to their personal experience. With these students you know they are comprehending the text concepts. It is sometimes more important to reach out to a slower reader and - after another student has shared a personal Anne dote that correctly shares the texts meaning - ask a question, perhaps even a switching scenario question. This is easier in smaller groups of young students, but it can be an effective tool for the entire class.
