The student is in the initial stage of the writing process. The student can convey his/her ideas effectively; however, s/he lacks knowledge about sequencing ideas, vocabulary, tenses, sentence structures, and genres.

In order to get the student to the intermediate stage, I would make use of sentence frames, graphic organizers, and modeled writing. In addition, I would make the student practice writing short paragraphs using sequencing words such as “firstly,” “next,” and “finally.” While teaching lessons, I would demonstrate the correct use of tenses along with providing appropriate vocabulary assistance in the form of word banks and visuals.

In addition, I would conduct group discussions among peers prior to writing.

I agree that the student has a strong foundation in expressing ideas. Your suggestions for using sentence frames, graphic organizers, and modeled writing provide meaningful support as the student develops confidence with organization and language skills. I also like the emphasis on sequencing words and peer discussions, as these strategies can help students organize their thoughts before writing. Providing vocabulary support and opportunities to practice in a supportive environment will likely encourage steady growth toward the intermediate stage.
