To build and support fluency in a mainstream classroom with diverse learners, I would apply many of the same strategies I use in my K–2 IND classroom, while adjusting for the larger group setting. I would begin by grouping students based on instructional reading levels, while also pulling some students individually for targeted support. Each group would have access to texts that are high-interest, culturally appropriate, and matched to their reading abilities to ensure engagement and confidence.

For fluency instruction, I would first model fluent reading by reading the text aloud. This allows students to hear proper pacing, expression, and phrasing. When appropriate, students would participate in echo reading to build confidence and accuracy, especially for bilingual students and those reading below grade level. I would then break down the text sentence by sentence to address common misconceptions, vocabulary challenges, and comprehension gaps.

Throughout the lesson, I would use ongoing observational formative assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instruction as needed. This approach supports fluency by combining explicit modeling, repeated exposure to text, and scaffolded practice, while still allowing students to engage with meaningful and interesting reading material. These strategies help meet the needs of struggling readers while continuing to challenge students who are on grade level.
