The videos helped reinforce why group work and collaboration are effective, but what stood out to me most was the emphasis on intentional and purposeful group work. Rather than simply placing students together and asking them to discuss a topic, the videos highlighted the importance of planning how students will interact and what outcomes are expected. This directly connects to my own practice and reinforces that group work must be structured in order to be meaningful.

One strategy that stood out to me was the use of sentence starters during think-pair-share activities. I can see how incorporating sentence frames would help guide students toward more focused and academic responses, especially for English Language Learners. Without this structure, group discussions can quickly become unproductive, often leading to students disengaging or responding with “I don’t know.”

I also appreciated the idea that students need to be explicitly taught how to work in groups. Setting clear expectations for participation, listening, and responding helps students understand what appropriate collaboration looks like. This is something I would like to establish early in the school year by modeling and practicing group work routines, almost as a primer for collaboration.

Overall, these strategies have helped me rethink how I approach collaborative learning. By intentionally planning group work, teaching expectations, and providing language supports, I can create more productive and meaningful learning experiences for my students.
