One scaffolding technique I use quite frequently in my classes is the use of graphic organizers. This is pretty effective in Civics with the many topics and ideas we cover in class. One adjustment or change I have made is instead of having all of the information on the graphic organizer I made it a fill in the blank and made students recall and look through their information to find out what would best fill in the blank. Then they had to dig further and answer the question that they just filled in the blanks for. This was used when we were learning the preamble to the Constitution so they had to fill in, for example, the blank in "to form a more ____ union." They had a reading that they were able to look back at and then were asked to explain what that means.
