Mod 2 Discussion: Getting to Know Our Students and Why
Getting to Know Our Students and Why
Getting to know and understand our ELLs is essential because their language learning journey is directly shaped by their cultural background, prior knowledge, and lived experiences. When we take time to learn who our students are, we can provide instruction that connects to their identities, validates their voices, and makes learning meaningful. This builds trust, which is the foundation for risk-taking in language learning.
Culture plays a critical role because it influences how students view school, authority, collaboration, and even how they demonstrate knowledge. For example, some cultures emphasize collective achievement while others prioritize individual success. If we ignore these cultural differences, we risk misinterpreting behaviors or creating barriers to participation. On the other hand, when we embrace students’ cultural assets—through texts, classroom discussions, and routines—we create an inclusive environment where ELLs feel seen and respected. In this way, culture is not just a background factor, but a driving force in how our ELLs engage with learning.
