I like how the teacher gave the students specific instructions and pre-taught how the -ow has two sounds then they went over each word together and see which sound made sense. You could use this approach with any content area or age. Give a direct instruction and then allow the students to choose which makes sense or which answer it could be based on what they have learned.
Giving the students instructions and letting them know upfront what will be taught and how certain words are pronounced and the rule that way they know how it is said throughout the lesson.
