Lyon Mod 10 Discussion
The video is a great example of going through step by step to teach phonics, but the first hurdle I can see is that there was cultural contexts of what sounds "right" being used to ultimately determine if one should use /o/ or /ow/ sounds in a word. Example, she walks through "growl" as gr-oh-l, and then asks "does that sound right?" Without preexisting knowledge that english speakers pronounce growl as "gr-ow-l," one wouldn't be able to make the needed distinctions. Interestingly, as a science teacher, I typically circumvent those instances of cultural-contexts because I'm introduce words like prokaroyote and mitosis, things that a lot of folks don't use casually. That being said, I always do my best to encourage and demonstrate phonemic awareness since the class is jargon-rich. (You (points to students) carry (pantomime carrying things) oats. Eukaryotes.)
