First off, I am a big fan of writing to learn. After taking over science, I don't get to utilize it as much as I would like to since there are specific concepts I'm trying to lead them to regarding the topics (how do the circulatory system and the respiratory system work together--one gets oxygen and one transports the oxygen and vice versa with carbon dioxide). Perhaps I should reevaluate that and try to implement it still. One idea could be to have students write about relative science articles. An easy example would be things like scientists cloning* dire wolfs after they were extinct. Biotechnology is a topic we cover for our standards, and we try to cap off those lessons with group/small stations on the ethics involved with implementing various tech in different scenarios. Both years I have done that, it seems like there is never enough time to really sink their teeth into as efficiently as I'd want. Perhaps I could cannibalize the stations and make it more of a individual read/write activity.
