Mod 1 Video Discussion
Building Cross Cultural Connections in Two Languages
One of the things I appreciated in the video was the multiple-modalities approach to language acquisition. I was impressed that the teacher used multiple modalities to reach her students from manipulating the cards on the floor to having multiple speakers providing examples of variations in how the target words sound. This multi-variate approach allows the students to gain access to the new vocabulary through the means by which each student is most comfortable and receptive. In my own classroom, I try to do something similar. Having been drilled in Gardner's theory in multiple-intelligences throughout my training, it reinforces my own beliefs in the correctness of Garner's Theory. I have always tried to employ Garner's ideas through the use of multiple modalities in every lesson, utilizing music, videos, text, manipulatives and whatever means might be at hand to get the lesson across.
