Mod 5 Discussion: Formal and Informal Assessments

Exit tickets have proven to be an effective formative assessment because students use them to reflect on their learning outcomes, ask questions they need answered and point out aspects of the lesson that they found confusing at its conclusion. This quick check-in allows me to assess student understanding and pinpoint areas needing extra support while prompting them to evaluate their learning journey. I plan to implement the think-pair-share method as a future teaching strategy. Students begin by answering a related lesson question independently then share their ideas with a partner before discussing them with the whole class. My ELL students will benefit from deeper understanding and better engagement through this supportive environment which allows them to process ideas and practice speaking. Pre-assessments have proved useful for me to recognize students' previous knowledge so I can adjust my teaching methods and accountability conversation questions improve student confidence while providing insights into their comprehension levels. Using reflection questions before new lessons allows me to monitor students' comprehension levels in real time. The backwards book walk technique benefits students because it removes reading stress and engages them in connecting with the text through various resources. The assessment strategies I use guide my teaching and simultaneously develop student confidence and understanding.
