I think the approach of the teacher in the second video can be applied to students of all ages. The teacher wanted to engage his students creatively, and as they were 5th graders, it was appropriate that he had them create lists of funny adjectives and funny animals and then mix and match label from the two lists to respond creatively. Giving my high school students the opportunity to respond creatively is essential to their engagement and thus their mastery of what we read. One example: my 12th graders read The Importance of Being Earnest this year. One assignment, after we had finished the play, was to imagine how we cast the play if our “actors” were characters from the SpongeBob cartoon series. That is another example of using a mix and match strategy to facilitate student engagement.
