In the novel we are reading, the standard we are working towards is: Analyze how multiple text structures and/or features convey a purpose and/or meaning in texts. The first step here is to be able to identify what a text structure is (i.e. Descriptive text, cause and effect, comparison/contrast; chronological). So the first questions here is: what is the text doing? A criterion based assessment to assess this basic understanding could be presenting students with a dozen passages from the novel exhibiting the various text structures and having students identify identify the type. This kind of assessment would also work as an interim assessment. The second question is how do these “text structures” contribute to the meaning of the text and/or purpose of the author? A formative assessment that could be used here would be a concept mapping activity.
