Mod 19 Discussion: Taking the Lead on Literacy
One content area approach I’d recommend across all subjects is academic language development through sentence frames and structured discussion. It works in every subject—whether students are explaining a math strategy, discussing a historical event, analyzing a science concept, describing movement in P.E., or critiquing a piece of art. This strategy helps all learners, especially ELLs, organize their thoughts and use subject-specific vocabulary accurately. I feel comfortable using and teaching this strategy because I’ve seen how effective it is in making students feel more confident participating. I’d show my colleagues how to model sentence starters like, “One example from the text is…,” “I solved the problem by…,” or “This part reminds me of…,” depending on the content. It's simple to implement and supports oral language, writing, and comprehension all at once.
