Mod 1 Discussion: Classroom Implications of Linguistic Theory
mod 1
When thinking about the Classroom Practice Implications in Second Language Theory, it is important to refrain from over correcting students because they need to practice being understood, not being perfect. When thinking about a behaviorist approach to language, we can practice modeling for students so they can see how communication is supposed to look. When an ELL is learning a new language being understood is a huge milestone even if the grammar is incorrect. We need to allow students a safe space for "productive struggle" in order to put their skills into practice. It is important to allow our students to make mistakes. In order to bring about student awareness for self-correction students can work in partners and repeat what their classmates have said. They can practice communication through acting, writing, and reading along with repetition in order to see what can be improved.
