Alternative ways to bring about student awareness for self-correction

Alternative ways to bring about student awareness for self-correction

I think it’s really important not to constantly correct students when they’re learning a new language, especially when they’re just trying to talk. If we stop them every time they make a mistake, they might get embarrassed or shut down and not want to participate. The goal is to help them build confidence and focus on getting their message across, not being perfect.

Instead of correcting all the time, I like the idea of repeating what they said the right way (recasting) or just modeling the correct sentence naturally in conversation. You can also use sentence starters or frames to help them get used to the structure. Asking questions like, “Does that sound right?” can also make them think and self-correct without feeling called out.

Overall, I think it's all about creating a safe space where they feel comfortable trying, messing up, and learning from it.
