After watching the videos in this module, I have a better understanding of how helpful criterion-based assessments can be. Instead of just giving a grade, they really show how well students are meeting a specific goal. One example I’m thinking about using in my classroom is for a math lesson on multiplying whole numbers by fractions. I’d make a simple checklist or rubric that focuses on things like: Did the student get the correct answer, Did they use a model (like a number line or picture)?, Did they explain their thinking clearly?, or Did they use math terms the right way?

This way, students know exactly what I’m looking for and can even self-check before turning in their work. For my interim assessment, I’d probably give them 1–2 problems halfway through the lesson or unit and ask them to solve them and explain their thinking. I’d use the same checklist to see how they’re doing so far. It would help me figure out who’s getting it and who might need a little more support before we move on.
