Mod 1 Discussion: Classroom Implications of Linguistic Theory
Module 1
When teaching a student who is learning English as a second language its important to not correct them, especially with small mistakes such as adding a "s" for correct tenses. Doing this often could cause a student to be anxious and lose confidence in their language acquisition. Pairing students up with other native English speakers could help them learn better. Children acquire new language through imitation so hearing the proper way a word is pronounced or the correct tense being used will allow the student to self-correct over time. Learning a language takes a lot of practice and having your ELL in situations where speaking English is necessary can help them catch on to the nuances of speaking English faster.
