To best meet the academic and communication needs of students, particularly English language learners, the most important questions to ask students or their parents include:

Language Background:

What is the student’s first language?

What languages are spoken at home?

English Proficiency:

How comfortable is the student speaking, reading, and writing in English?

Which language does the student prefer to use for communication?

Educational History:

What is the student’s previous educational experience in their home country?

Are there specific subjects or skills where the student feels confident or struggles?

Cultural Background:

What is the student’s country of origin, and are there cultural practices or beliefs that are important for us to understand?

Support Needs:

What additional support does the student need to succeed academically (e.g., tutoring, counseling)?

How can we best communicate with the family to keep them informed about the student’s progress?

Emotional and Social Considerations:

Has the student experienced any trauma or challenges related to their transition to the U.S.?

Are there social or emotional supports that would help the student adjust to the new environment?

Asking these questions will provide valuable insights into each student's unique background, helping educators tailor their approach to effectively support their learning and communication needs.
