With the many approaches a teacher could take with students who they feel are comfortable or too familiar with a setting I’d say a mixture of a heterogeneous group activity that has group accountability would be an effective way to gauge student performance. This approach gives the student a chance to show the ability to communicate with students of other ethnic backgrounds as well as competence levels while holding them accountable with work they do. To go along with that it will give the group a common goal to work toward which ideas will have to be exchanged to complete the assignment.
