Mod 11 - Reflection and Self- Assessment

  • Language as a system of learning- When learning and speaking a language one has to comprehend the information that is being shared. Keeping in mind that words are the symbols and they can have different meanings in different regions of the world.
  • The relevance of including culture in your curriculum - It’s important for students to know that we are all different, but we have more in common than what meets the eye. Having a culture day where we all can share a piece of our family life and culture help us to see how we are unique but we can come together a community.
  • Cultural sensitivity - culture is valued differently from person to person. It is important to recognize one’s personal biases they may have if they aren’t willing to build rapport.
  • Home language and its relationship to a child’s academic progress - students may have more than one language in the home. Some parents may only speak native language at home and expect the student to learn English at school. Knowing this dynamic can help with how you approach communicating with parents at home and getting the families involved.
  • Linguistic routines - teaching decodable skills to students are beneficial for students to be successful independent readers that not only read, but comprehend the text
  • The impact of learning a 2nd language on all content areas - home language plays a major role on the students ability to acquire a new language.
  • Scaffolding - one way of teaching a skill does not benefit all students. Every student doesn’t learn at the same pace/speed, level, and they all have different needs.
  • High quality early childhood literacy - teaching/learning should be consistent and meaningful
  • Structured speaking and listening- a child is able to obtain information so effortlessly so make sure that it is meaningful
