Mod 11 Mid-Course Reflection and Self-Assessment
- Language as a system of learning-Language is considered as a system because language has a specific set of sounds that are combined into meaningful uttered words. Language controls the thinking and learning process. This is where students develop their critical and creative thinking. Language learning is the ability to communicate and interact in order to participate with others.
- The relevance of including culture in your curriculum- Multicultural education is important because it enhances student engagement when cultural identities are respected, it motivates the students learning experience and students become invested in the class.
- Cultural sensitivity- This skill is very important for educators because understanding and learning about students culture helps to implement cultural education in the curriculum and also creating a safe and inclusive learning environment where all students feel safe and nurtured. Teachers create the environment in the class that encourages acceptance understanding and the celebration of being different. This promotes awareness and student success.
- Home language and its relationship to a childs academic progress- Many studies have shown that children can associate new concepts with familiar words and phrases from their home language. This is important to know as an educator because we are able to help build on that information and plan our curriculum so that we can prepare students academically so that they can increase their chances for a successful learning experience.
- Linguistic routines- Linguistic is the study of human languages by conveying the origins of words and languages. In helping students in the class feel connected to what they are learning through tools such as phonetic, phonology, morphology, syntax and sematic will help them better understand the class and set assignments. Encouraging students to participate and build relationship so they are able to apply basic skill like listening, speaking, reading and writing will help teachers conduct student progress observations and plan class curriculum accordingly.
- The impact of learning a 2nd language on all content areas- There are many benefits in learning a second language. It helps develop strong cognitive skills, multitasking, listening skills and problem solving. Learning a second language helps you interact with other people, it opens doors for work, travel and to understand other cultures. In students they often find it hard to understand these benefits because mentally they are only focused in learning the language at hand. So, ELLs learners often lose their native language because they are not able to mentally translate in both languages. The process of this is not always simple but not impossible.
- Scaffolding- Scaffolding is the process in which teachers offer support to students while they learn and develop a new concept or skill. Some strategies that can be used in the class with struggling students are providing examples, breaking down learning materials, creating manageable steps for their learning needs and providing feed back and guidance.
- High quality early childhood literacy- When it comes to early childhood literacy reading to a child from birth increases the childs vocabulary. Asking a child critical questions and letting them to problem solve will develop a well rounded critical, and creative thinker. Playing age appropriate board games and vocabulary games will aid in the child being able to decipher words. The child will extend their vocabulary and build relationships through play. Share reading with the child gives them an opportunity to hear you read and promote them to read aloud with you. Its important to ask questions while reading and come up with alternative endings. This helps the child become not just a better reader but also you are able to determine if the child is understanding what he/she is reading.
- Structured speaking and listening- The appropriate teaching methods and techniques for structured speaking and listening is through grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency and comprehension.
