Scenario Response 5
In the case of Jin Wu, he has demonstrated the biggest issue we have today with our students. They are able to read the text presented to them but when asked to write about it they are stuck. In the case of Jin Wu not being able to start writing could be that he did not understand what he read, was not able to organize his ideas, or he was not able to comprehend the vocabulary in the text. This just means that Jin needs more support in comprehension in reading and writing. The first thing I would do is give Jin reading materials with critical thinking questions to answer. I would also teach him to underline key words in the text to help him understand vocabulary. Jin will also be given the task to write a summary about the text this prepares him to organizing his ideas and as a teacher gives me an idea if he is understanding. Once that is established I will work with him on vocabulary and work on writing prompts.
Students get stuck writing because they are unable like Jin understand how or where to start. Teaching students to organize their thoughts about what they just read is the best way to get them writing. I usually do class discussion on a reading assignment, then after the discussion have the students write a summary. Due to the discussion the students get information from other students that they themselves may have not gotten from the text which makes the summary process easier for them to write. I believe that Jin would benefit from this strategy as well.
